Now why was that part genuinely chilling?

Probably because of some preexisting, but unstated philosophy:

&quot;If you love something (or if you&#039;re building something) someone will come to destroy it.&quot;

Or should I say...

&quot;If you build it, they will come to knock it down.&quot;

Some of the denizens of my hometown seemed to implement that philosophy in their lives.  The vaskanias were a little hard to see, because they were often shaded under the brim of a tattered baseball cap (John Deere or Massey Ferguson logos, not team logos).</description>
