Though I've commented to Berry on this directly, I wanted to share why I think this story is excellent. In many cultures, especially those that still retain animist beliefs, those in a position of reverence, holiness, or spiritual leader-ness, are believed to perceive the world entirely different than the rest of us. They either recognize omens and important details from the mundane, such as the way birds fly, to the way the wind might change direction before a storm. In their beliefs, there is nothing mundane. They must live in a world that is dramatically different than ours, as though someone added two more colors to the spectrum or all of a sudden, you could determine the color of a sound. Weird stuff, indeed. But I think this story catches the essence of that. It's something very rare, to see done right. And in this case, it was done right.

Excellent, Berry. In agree with Brad, very atmospheric. I could feel the cool dew of mornings, long cast shadow days of winter.
Loss is the most difficult to articulate. Well done.

As always, after reading something like this I just want to go to a quiet place and think. Or make one. One more stone in the wall of your life. Please continue to build...

See. Here we writers alight one by one and with black tongues squawk:

Very good, Berry! :) Wonderful ending.

I can really see the McCarthy influences in this one, and I love where your work has been heading.
