Chiming in here to praise JKC, and her forthcoming novella that I’ll be publishing in the next volume of ALEMBICAL. I’m not surprised to learn that she fences, because a foil is the perfect metaphor for her novella, light and flexible, but solid and quick, powerful and dazzling to behold.

Here at Paper Golem, we’re hoping to unleash the next ALEMBICAL in late October, with a launch at World Fantasy. With luck, J will be there in person to sign copies!

Great interview, Marshall. Thanks to you and J. for making me a better writer. I was wondering specifically HOW J. makes those settings come to life and Early Winter is one of my favorites too. I knew they were well researched and I’ve always loved her realistic and believable characters. Love that quote and title too! I hope I can incorporate what I’ve learned here into my own writing. Thanks for the informative piece.

Hi Cat,

The story set in Saratoga Springs will be appearing in the next volume of Alembical. It’s–not too surprisingly coming from me–about a young widow who’s trying to save her farm and racing stables, finding aid in unexpected places, and battling her own insecurities along the way.

The date for the volume is still pending, but I’m extremely pleased the editors at Alembical liked it well enough to pick it up ;o) Novella length (and this one’s pushing 40K) is a tough sell.
