Wow. What a lyrical, strange story. I loved Stool, and Suitcase, and, and... and the squealing bits of lint tucking themselves in the suitcase. Very dreamy and weird. Stuff, stuff, stuff.

Thanks!

Leaving a comment here on April 4 for the Fantasy Magazine best-of-2009 poll... related contest. (We can leave comments for up to five stories, right?) Well, this was my other favorite.

The language was magnificent, and the personalities of all the quite animated inanimate objects were so clever, so fun, so pleasing. It's a great take on the idea of found family.

This is such a beautiful story. And such an odd coincidence that I read this the same day I stumbled upon a couple articles talking about how researchers are adding 'personality' to common everyday devices to make them more human and (hopefully) less disposable!

Thank you.

Absolutely incredible. The common familiar nature of the companion objects strikes a beautiful contrast with the surrealism of the setting. Who hasn't owned at least one such suitcase?
Did I detect a bit of Eastern philosophy in there? To own is to be owned.
Either way, I just loved it. It was a delightful daydream at the end of my hectic workweek.

Wonderful! Just wonderful!

Even lint, which squealed with delight at being included and snuggled down into lining and creases and sang a little fuzzy chorus of grateful thanks. --loved that!

Also "things both necessary and un"
