Perhaps, perhaps. It's been a long journey from the original movie mentioned in the article to S.A.C. 2nd GIG...it's probably just run it's course but the direction for the last series was definitely lacking.
(BSG..no hard feelings on it's ending here just the way it was ended)

But you have a good point - it does seem like people are less weary of a potentially sucky future. Look at the recent Terminator movie. Not to say anything of McGee's directing skills but I really expected it to do better at the box office....

A good point, in Akira the "cyber" aspect is more inherent to the world than the real focus of the story.

Gotta disagree with you about SCC though :) I think it got canned because people are getting tired of it always raining in the future (witness the falloff for BSG), people just get tired of being beaten in the head over and over with the "the future is going to suck" meme. It holds up well for a 2.5hr film, but not for 22+ hours in a season with absolutely no letup...

Hi Amy!

Metropolis is a good example and anything but Osamu Tezuka is more than welcome. I've always focused on it more as an example of steampunk than cyberpunk anime though...go figure ^^

Thanks Kimberly!

I chose not to focus on Akira as I felt that the main focus was always not exactly on cyborgism but conveyed was a more postmodern-warning type of anime...and yes, it is overrated - it was even featured in a Heineken ad....

You could also mention Metropolis. I guess it isn't original exactly, though.

A newer anime, however, is Eve no Jikan. Which questions how androids should be treated.

Hi Ren! A good insightful cross section of "cyber" anime that has had a major influence across cultures. I note you side-stepped Akira (don't have a problem with that either, I feel it's getting over-quoted as is) which is sort of the quintessential anime everyone's been exposed to, but I think the ones you have outlined here are a stronger example of the man/machine meme...
