I loved the concept, I loved the realism that underlay the fantasy, and the whole idea of a “voice like a cello” was marvelous. The title grabbed me, and the story kept me.

Tiph — i agree, thats the thought that came to my mind exactly. What an interesting concept – she can hear the dead, but they cant hear her. Horrible, actually, when I consider it.
The ending seems to pull so many parts together for me – why her father would have a relationship with someone half his age, how she can overcome her “disability” – both wrapped up in Alain (fate required the relationship so they could meet? the kiss on the cheek of a stranger implies to me his intuitive knowledge of her need) and as was said, why the voices have no form and are not linked to a place, and why the voice of the cello, so comforting disappeared without cause or warning and then reappeared again in her life.

What a wonderful story. Got me in the gut, but left me smiling.

And what a great example of an ending that is inevitable without being predictable.

Beautifully well done story.

To Nathan: I think the musical voices are unborn children. She mentioned something about it in the beginning: “These musical voices weren’t tied to language, nor to place, and they cared nothing for themselves. They were like dogs, almost, or children: curious and friendly, harmless.” That would explain why Alain’s voice disappeared “twenty years ago,” because he was born then.

Just my thoughts on it.
