Thanks, Stephen. I look forward to reading your take on Eddings and the Belgariad. Man, I could go on for days... Those books really do need a serious reexamination, not just as bestsellers or objects of nostalgia, but as serious (and yet seriously approachable) works of fantasy literature. The sheer clarity of concept and execution... It's amazing, especially when you consider how convoluted and impenetrable a lot of high fantasy tends to get. And the ease with which Eddings did so is just beautiful.

However, I am now calling a moratorium on any more of my favorite writers dying this year.

Jason -- spot on. I couldn't have said all that better myself.

Mind you, I'm going to try, because I can't love the Belgariad as much as I do and not.

Beautiful. You totally nailed that feeling of wonder upon first reading Eddings. I never made it past the Mallorean (and felt that even it was a little tired) but I will never forget how affected I was by the Belgariad. I was turned on to it by the mother of my best friend (who was also a teacher) and I rushed through the whole series in record time, then bought my own copies and re-read them immediately. Thanks for evoking the wonderful memories on the occasion of the man's passing.

Great article - couldn't agree more. Just reading those character names in your article gave me a pang that few characters do. Vale, David Eddings.
