Leaving a comment for the Best of Fantasy Magazine poll.

Lake Tahoe's Lover was definitely my favorite short story of 2009; probably my favorite short story of any year. It's a masterpiece.

Leaving a comment here on Jan 4 for the best-of-Fantasy-Magazine poll.

I liked this story best of all the ones I read in Fantasy Magazine this year because both characters--the lake and the woman, change and develop over time. As I said in my earlier comment, I like the persistence of both characters. Also, the plot twists are unexpected without being arbitrary, and the ending is unusual but satisfying.

@jayshka: I thought this too about Octavio Paz's "My Life with the Wave"--another short story I really loved. Yes, they do seem kin to one another, the two stories.

This reminded me a lot of Octavio Paz's "My Life with the Wave" short story. I would highly recommend that all who enjoyed the above story check it out!

Great story. I liked the emphasis on the elements. I myself was born on the cusp of a fire and earth sign, and here I am in the Sierra Nevadas!

What a wonderful story. Like Fox up above, I liked the line about the cruise ship. But mainly I liked the persistence of both the lake and Els. Neither of them acquiesces, instead, they both grow and change. I'm glad Els found it in her heart to care about the lake in the end, and I'm glad the lake was able to travel and see the world.

This was an interesting concept. I felt sorry for the lake, LOL, I would have said yes in a heart beat...but only if the ocean would have said 'no' first, LOL.
Anyway, thank you so much for sharing this and congrats. It's very lovely. I loved the part where he told her about th cruise ship and if she didn't like it he could sink one she did like. What a sweet lake...

Absolutely amazing. You took my hand and led me through the story at Els' side. My affection for the lake seemed to grow as it diminished. I found myself remembering a line from a song from the long-gone days of my youth.
"Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone?"

This was a hopeful story. The dank walls and hollows of unrequited love often seem so unyielding that we accidentally overlook all the sights and wonders that a journey in obsession has to offer.

Isn't Aries a fire sign?
