I didn't watch the cartoons, didn't (and still don't) plan to see the movie, so I read this with just pure enjoyment of the witty remarks and sarcasm. I loved it. Great job!

Mari, don't get me wrong, I've even got Serenity on DVD, so I was bummed it didn't get the release it should have. But, with it being late summer now, I'm not very hopeful for District 9 just yet. I hope it's better than what its own producers gave it credit to be.

Fox - I was expecting a bad movie. In fact, we went to the $5 showing in full expectations that the movie would probably suck, and we didn't want to pay full price.

As to why I went, well, I wouldn't have gone on my own, but I tagged along with a group of friends, and we all had fun - well, most of us had fun - tearing the movie to pieces afterwards. (The GI Joe fan was sad.)

Clint - point about the release date, although I don't think that necessarily dooms all films released in August/September. I loved Serenity, for example, and went to it in September, dragging my best friend along, even though I'd already seen the sneak preview for it in June. I liked Tropic Thunder, released in August of last year - not a great film but entertaining.

You know what the true test of how good a movie is really going to be? Its release date. The sweetspot of movies that are sure to draw crowds is around Memorial day through the middle of July. August and up through mid-September are either not as good (seriously) as anticipated or are regulated to particular audiences.

Look at Serenity. It was a September release and really only drew crowds that were fans of Firefly. G.I. Joe could have opened the same month as Transformers, but it sucked rocks (even compared to Transformers), so there ya go.

I'm a little worried about 9 when it comes out, but the title of the movie and the release date are more likely to be a marketing gimmick, rather than an indication of suck.

Another good indication. Solomon Kane. The release date keeps getting bumped and I predict when it is done and in theatres, we are looking at October or February. Two incredibly slow months for movies.

Now, this does not include what are determined to be Oscar picks, since they tend to release those in fall and winter because they are closer to the Academy Awards and have built in advertising once the Golden Globes start noticing what will get Oscar Nods. Tent pole movies seldom get Oscars (unless it's special effects), but they won't dump a lot of money into a movie that will suck. So the movies used as tent poles are usually pretty good. G.I. Joe is not a tent pole.

I have learned, over many years of movie-going experience, that one cannot base one's opinion, on the bias reviews of another. Case in point...this this review...

You simply can't go to a movie like this and expect an emmy award winning masterpiece, I'm sorry! To do so and then write about how terrible it was afterwards with such blatant 'I was expecting more'-sarcasm is pathetic. I mean, really! What the heck were you expecting??? LOL!

I had fun only because I was with a group of friends who were happy to make fun of the movie with me. That alleviated the pain.

But here's the thing: I see no reason why the movie had to be this awful just because the cartoon was bad (I'm taking your word for it, since I have pretty much zilch memories of the cartoon - I know it was occasionally on since my brother liked it, but I can't remember it).

1. This is the "Rise" of Cobra, so you get to see the origin of Cobra Commander. He's there, you just don't know him by that name yet. Same with Destro, though you know who that'll be from the 1600's France prologue.

2. I left before the end of the credits, so I'm guessing no. I swear there was a "knowing is half the battle" line thrown in there, though.

Two questions.

1) Where the hell is Cobra Commander in all this?
2) Was there a PSA at the end of the movie?
