Two Views of 9 Don’t Add Up to a 10

Hint to movie characters the world over: if your chosen leader is constantly apologizing for having let yet another one of you suffer a horrible death in an avoidable mishap, maybe vote for another leader. Just a thought.

Book Review: The Empire of Ice Cream by Jeffrey Ford

A late summer sandcastle. A cup of tea with a friend. A painting of a tropical shore. The violin sound of extinguished birthday candles. The power of words, of the natural world, of dreams, of Death Itself, or at least Charon, his boatman. To a select few is given the ability to see the universe in a grain of sand. Even fewer have the ability to convey their experience in such a way as to evoke it in others.

Images of Anna

The morning was turning out to be a bust. The first client wanted to pay with a personal check, which I’ve learned to not accept. She had no cash, credit card, or ID. The second client had cash but turned out to be a thirteen-year-old kid who wanted a “really sexy picture” for her boyfriend. No way: session cancelled. The third client was late.

Book Review: Fall of Thanes by Brian Ruckley

Chaos fills the world as the followers of the severe Black Road creed have overwhelmed the Glas Valley and threaten Kolkry and Vaymouth, the political strongholds of the True Bloods. The mad rage of Aeglyss the na’kyrim, once the tool of the invaders, has now taken over the hosts of the Black Road and threatens to engulf everyone. Can Kanin, a thane of the Black Road Bloods, find a way to stop the half-blood Aeglyss, whom he helped unleash and who cost him the life of his sister?

Old School Console Love: The Nintendo Years

If you were raised on the original Nintendo Entertainment System, conjure up images of your childhood. What comes to mind? If you’re anything like me, it is probably images of Mario, Link, Little Mac, Samus Aran, Solid Snake, and the Howard and Nestor cartoons from the early issues of Nintendo Power Magazine. These are more than just iconic images from your childhood — they are old friends you may not have dusted off in years.

Viva l’Other: Jerome Stueart

But if someone wants to write a character which is “other” I wouldn’t stop them. Instead, I would encourage them to stretch themselves. I certainly don’t immediately identify with, or always find accurate to my experiences, the white, rural, college-educated, religious gay male characters I find. And I don’t always want to write that character. I would hate to stop someone else from writing them though.

Book Review: Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev

One of the joys of good young adult literature is its leavening — not like the turgid, dense rye of a 19th century Russian novel or the artisanal whole-wheat of Anne Tyler, but puff pastry and pudding like George McDonald or C.S. Lewis, cookie-d Joan Aiken, the delicious, moist cakery of Diane Wynne Jones or candied comic books.

True Blood Season 2, Episodes 10 & 11: “New World in My View” and “Frenzy”

Due to bull-headed, demidivine circumstances beyond our control, this week’s a True Blood recap double feature. And it’s just as well, really, because “New World in My View” and “Frenzy” are very much of a piece, making up the climactic third act of this second season. When our weary Dallas party finally reunites with the god-crazed Bon Temps staycationers, grand plans are set in motion and hijinks inevitably ensue. This being True Blood, however, “hijinks” means meat-altars, extemporaneous impersonations of Satan, and pleasant games of Yahtzee.
