Loved the little historical details (past and present). The podcast reading isn't bad either (http://www.fantasy-magazine.com/2009/10/clockatrice-by-tanith-lee-audio/). I read a few of the competitors' stories and "Clockatrice" should be a dead ringer. Tanith Lee is one of those amazing authors who nevertheless seem, inexplicably, to be underappreciated when it comes time to actually win awards. She has such a talent for bringing so vividly to life. I especially like the first half and her evocation of Elizabethan times and her sense of humor -- she almost laughs at herself, at her own conventions, at this stage of her career.
