Uncomfortable Realities: An Interview with Jesse Bullington

Jesse Bullington’s debut novel, The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart, has caused quite the ruckus in the literary world even before its official release. Reviews have been both positive and less so, perhaps in part due to Bullington’s uncompromising and grim representation of fourteenth-century life. In this interview, Jesse and I discuss the grittier elements of the novel, including bodily fluids, gore, representations of gender and race, and how these elements all fit into the historical reality of the time period, unpleasant though it might be to our more modern sensibilities. Also I gratuitously misuse the word panacea.

The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart will be available through Orbit, and will be in bookstores November 16th, 2009.

Delightful! I don’t ordinarily watch video interviews, but this one was quite good. The patter back and forth was delightful, from the bibliographies to the bodily fluids.
