As a lover of Sherlock Holmes, I will never see this film. Had the character been called elsewise, I’m sure it would have been worth watching. But to call it Sherlock Holmes is just cruel.

Sure there were explosions and fights in Doyle’s tales, but they certainly weren’t about explosions and fights

I think the intended target of Blackwood’s plan is telling of this new age:

SPOILER ALERT.

Normally in these Holmesian messes the monarchy is the target (The Great Mouse Detective and so forth). But here, the Queen is not mentioned. No, it’s parliament, and I think this is because Ritchie assumes his audience so stupid that they need an American Congress stand-in.

Thank you Miss Valentine, that was a beautiful analysis of a movie I feared would be fraught with disastrous heavy-handing. And it was. Sad, considering what a fan I am of the older Holmesian efforts.
