What a wonderful read. It has been so long since I was given the opportunity to read something that was whimsical, it reminded me of English class in high school and the mandatory read we all had to do, and then realizing homework could be fun! Thanks Claire, and good luck with your endeavours.

My choice for best of the year because:

Without actually adding two drops of laudanum to your morning tea Ms. Humphrey takes you with her words as far as you can go on a sensual, decadent trip. Young Raymond's coming-of-age journey travels that rare knife edge of wicked innocence. The best part is that this is just a preface; "The Tongue of Bees" is laden like a basketful of belladonna berries with a portentous future: the mysterious back of the bookshop, the start of a coven, and the chance to fly anywhere.

Ron, I haven't read any of Jane Robert's books--thanks for the recommendation and the compliments.

Bookmole, no need to apologize! I appreciate you taking the time to read it anyway!

Sorry to be the naysayer here, but I really did not enjoy this. Well written it certainly is, but I just wanted to shake Raymond till his teeth rattled. And as for his mother - sorry, no way!

The story is well written, well plotted and flows nicely - just made my teeth grate. Sorry, Claire!

Claire, you write most poetically. I thoroughly enjoyed your story and I look forward to reading more of your creations. I'm curious as to whether you have read any of Jane Robert's books.

Raymond is so intriguing! I can't wait to learn more about him and I would love to hear more of Mummy's past as well. Beautiful!

Romantic and vividly painted imagery! This style was a favorite of mine as a child & young(er) adult and I have not enjoyed it as much in the past 10 years because the heightened reality seemed to distance me from the experience as I have grown older (much in the same way that I don't enjoy musical theatre as much as I did as a kid). Somehow you are able to still draw me into the fantastical journey despite my slightly jaded self. ; ) Thank you for the increasingly rare journey into the super-realistic. Masterfully executed and delicious to read. Please let us know where to read more about Raymond's journeys!
