There are a lot of forgettable fantasy movies out there. The reasons are many: the production values are low; the concept falls flat; it’s a Dungeons & Dragons rip-off; it’s the actual Dungeons & Dragons movie. The good news is that every once in a while, a forgettable movie gets into the hands of an actor who knows just how to liven up a dull take by chewing a little scenery…
One of the best YA novel’s of 2009, Daniel Pinkwater’s sequel to The Neddiad (inspired by The Illiadis The Yggyssey (similarly inspired by The Odyssey) is charming, interesting, and often quite funny.
It was Jeffrey who had wanted to go to the bookstore after school. Jeffrey, Emily had discovered after he moved in with them, read constantly. He read in the morning while he ate his cereal. He read whenever he finished an assignment before everyone else in class, which was pretty much all the time.
Now that we’ve bid 2009 goodbye, it’s time to take a fond look back. We had an excellent year for fiction and many of our stories have been picked up for Best Of volumes. It is a sad commentary on the state of science fiction films when a minimally competent script looks like genius compared to recent offerings. So it is with James Cameron’s Avatar.
