From Modern Mythcraft to Magical Surrealism

Christmas Carols

There are few memorable movie adaptations of A Christmas Carol. Sure, it’s admirable when they try to switch stuff up by having “Scrooge” played by a woman or something, but you know the whole concept has jumped the shark when Barbie gets involved.

Mickey’s Christmas Carol

Being a big fan of DuckTales, I always assumed that the character of Scrooge McDuck originated in this TV special, but apparently he had a life in comics before then. Still, he was named for Dickens’ miserly character, and in all of his incarnations he loved money more than people until someone came along to show him the error of this folly.

A Muppet Christmas Carol

Does this really need an introduction? Who doesn’t love this timeless story recast with lovable Muppets? Unfortunately, we could only find the trailer online.

This movie is one of the few modern-day retellings that actually captured the wit and the darkness of the original. Though the trailer below makes the movie seem like a comedy, it’s not a light treatment of the tale at all. And the scene where Bill Murray is left in the sewer with the frozen bum is both chilling an touching…. but mostly chilling.

A Diva’s Christmas Carol

Though this movie is by no means an instant classic or great cinema, it did allow Vanessa Williams to show off her Evil Diva chops, which fans of Ugly Betty should appreciate.

Barbie in a Christmas Carol

You thought I was kidding, didn’t you?
